What it is for

The equalizer changes the character of the sound: more or less bass, clearer voices, brighter high notes. It has 10 bands, from 31 Hz (the deepest bass) to 16 kHz (the highest sounds), each adjustable between −12 and +12 dB, plus an overall level.

It works on radio stations and on TV channels with MPEG (MP2) sound: the sound goes through the receiver's processor, and you hear every change straight away while you adjust it.

It has 7 ready-made presets (Normal, Voice and news, Pop, Rock, Classical, More bass, Night) and a night mode, which makes loud sounds quieter and quiet sounds louder, so you can hear everything at low volume.

The settings can apply to all stations or only to the station that is playing now (“For this station”). The receiver remembers them for each station and applies them by itself when you tune to it again.

By default the equalizer is off, and the sound plays as usual. The same settings are also in the web interface, on the /egalizator page.

How to get here

Path: Main menu > Settings > Audio & Sound Tracks > Equalizer.

Keys while watching TV: MENU 6 4 3.

From the radio screen: GREEN, or hold OK for about a second and then choose “Equalizer” (see the page “Per-station equaliser”).

In the web interface: the /egalizator page.

What you see on the screen

At the top, the title “Equalizer”, the clock and the date.

Below the title, the status in words, in its own colour: green when the station plays through the equalizer (for example “Playing with the equalizer: MP2, 256 kbit/s.”), yellow when the equalizer cannot work on the current station, with the reason (for example “This station has AC3 sound. The equalizer works on stations with MPEG (MP2) sound.”), white when it is off or no station is playing (for example “The equalizer is off. The sound goes through the sound chip as usual.”).

Underneath, a small line with the sound details, only while the sound plays through the equalizer: “decoded in the processor”, the sample rate (for example 48 kHz), how much of the processor it uses and the sound delay.

Four boxes: “Equalizer” (On or Off), “Preset” (the preset name or “Custom”), “Night mode” (On or Off) and “For this station” (Yes, No or “No station” when no station is playing). The selected box is blue.

The 10 bands, from 31 Hz to 16 kHz, and the “Level” column, separated from them by a line. Each has its value at the top (for example “+3 dB”), a slider with a round knob and the frequency at the bottom. On the left is the scale +12, 0, −12. A line joins the knobs of the bands: this is the equalizer curve. The selected column is lighter; with the equalizer on, its bar and knob are yellow.

Behind the sliders, darker bars show how loud each band is right now; they appear only while the sound goes through the equalizer. With the equalizer off, the whole display is grey.

Below the display, an explanation of the current selection (for example, at 1 kHz: “1 kHz, mijlocul: corpul vocilor. Up and down: 1 dB more or less, from −12 to +12 dB.”), and underneath a small line says what the keys do where you are (for example “Left and right: choose. Up and down: change. OK: keep and close.”).

At the bottom, the keys: RED “Cancel”, GREEN “Keep”, YELLOW “Next preset” and BLUE “On / Off”.

Rows and settings

RowValuesDefaultWhat it does
EqualizerOn, OffOffOn: the sound of the stations goes through the equalizer, with the settings below. Off: the sound plays as usual, directly through the sound chip; the settings are remembered for next time. On or Off is the same for all stations. When you want to use the equalizer, or to hear how the station sounds without it.
PresetNormal, Voice and news, Pop, Rock, Classical, More bass, Night, CustomNormalA preset sets all 10 bands by itself. “Normal” leaves all bands at 0 dB. “Voice and news” lowers the bass and raises the midrange, so speech is easier to understand. “Pop” and “Rock” raise the bass and the treble, “Rock” more so. “Classical” raises only the treble, slightly. “More bass” raises the low bands. “Night” lowers the bass and also turns on night mode. When you change a band by hand, the preset becomes “Custom”; you cannot select it, it appears by itself. As a starting point: choose the preset closest to what you want, then adjust the bands one by one.
Night modeOn, OffOffLoud sounds become quieter and quiet sounds louder, so you can hear even whispered speech without turning the volume up. Turning it on or off by hand also changes the preset name (the “Night” preset has it on). In the evening, when you listen quietly and do not want adverts or loud music to drown out the voices.
For this stationYes, No, No stationNoYes: the preset, the bands, night mode and the level are remembered only for the station playing now, and are applied by themselves every time you tune to it. No: the station uses the usual settings, shared by all stations; when you switch to No, the screen shows the usual settings, and with “Keep” the station forgets its own settings. “No station” appears when no station is playing (or when a film, an internet channel or a DAB+ station from satellite is playing); the settings then apply to all stations. The receiver remembers the settings of up to 300 stations; beyond that it forgets the ones set longest ago. When a particular station sounds different from the others, for example a news station where you want clearer voices.
Bands 31 Hz, 63 Hz, 125 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 4 kHz, 8 kHz, 16 kHzfrom −12 dB to +12 dB, in steps of 1 dB0 dB on allEach band makes one part of the sound louder (+) or quieter (−): 31 Hz the deepest bass, which you feel more than hear; 63 Hz deep bass (bass drum, bass guitar); 125 Hz bass, the warmth of music and of male voices; 250 Hz the lower part of voices and instruments; 500 Hz the lower midrange (too much sounds muffled); 1 kHz the midrange, the body of voices; 2 kHz the presence of voices (words are easier to understand); 4 kHz clarity (consonants, guitars); 8 kHz brilliance (cymbals, the breath in a voice); 16 kHz air, the highest sounds. When you want more bass (the low bands), clearer voices (1-4 kHz) or a less harsh sound (lower 4-8 kHz).
Levelfrom −12 dB to +12 dB, in steps of 1 dB0 dBMatches the loudness of the sound with the equalizer to the normal sound. If you have raised many bands, the sound is louder than on other stations; you lower it here. If you have lowered the bands, you raise it. When, after your adjustments, the station sounds louder or quieter than before.
Remote volume (only in the web interface, under “For tests and matching”)Automatic, In the equalizer, On the sound chipAutomaticWhere the remote's volume is applied to the sound with the equalizer. Automatic: the receiver detects by itself whether the remote's volume also applies to the sound with the equalizer. The other two choose the place by hand. Only if, with the equalizer on, the remote's volume no longer changes the loudness.
Sound chip (only in the web interface, under “For tests and matching”)default, another name, typed in by handdefaultThe sound chip through which the sound with the equalizer plays. Leave it on “default”; another name is entered only for tests. Not needed in normal use.
On TV channels (only in the web interface, under “For tests and matching”)Yes, NoYesYes: the equalizer also works on TV channels with MPEG sound, and the sound is kept in step with the picture. No: on TV channels the sound plays as usual, through the sound chip, and the status says “On TV channels the equalizer is turned off in the settings. The sound goes through the sound chip.”. When you want the equalizer on radio only.
Matching with the picture on the TV (only in the web interface, under “For tests and matching”)from −300 ms to +300 ms, in steps of 100 msOn TV channels with the equalizer, moves the sound slightly later or earlier than the picture. If the lips move after the sound, choose a number with +; if the sound comes after the lips, one with −. Only if, on a TV channel with the equalizer, the words do not match the lips.

Keys

LEFT / RIGHTMove to the previous or next item, in the order on screen: Equalizer, Preset, Night mode, For this station, the 10 bands, Level. From one end you go round to the other. The explanation at the bottom changes.
UP / DOWNChange the selected item: a band or the Level by 1 dB more (UP) or less (DOWN); the Preset to the next or previous one; on Equalizer, Night mode and For this station they switch between Yes and No (On and Off). You hear it straight away.
OKOn Equalizer, Night mode and For this station: switches between Yes and No. On Preset: the next preset. On a band or on Level: keeps everything and closes.
GREEN“Keep”: saves all settings and closes the screen.
RED“Cancel”: restores the settings from when the screen was opened (you hear them again straight away) and closes without saving anything.
YELLOW“Next preset”, from anywhere on the screen.
BLUE“On / Off”: turns the equalizer on or off, from anywhere on the screen. You hear it straight away; it is kept after “Keep”.
EXITWith no changes, closes the screen. If you have changed something, it asks “Keep the changes?”: Yes keeps them and closes, No restores what was there and closes.

Step by step

Turning on the equalizer with a preset

  1. Tune to a radio station and press MENU 6 4 3. The cursor is on the “Equalizer” box.
  2. Press OK: the box shows “On”.
  3. Press RIGHT to go to “Preset”, then UP until you reach the preset you like (for example “Pop”). You hear each one straight away.
  4. Press GREEN to keep it.

Raising the bass by hand

  1. Press MENU 6 4 3 and turn on the equalizer if it is off (BLUE).
  2. Press RIGHT until you reach 63 Hz (the fifth press from the “Equalizer” box).
  3. Press UP a few times and listen. The preset becomes “Custom”.
  4. If the sound has become too loud, go with RIGHT to “Level” and press DOWN. When you have finished, press OK or GREEN.

Settings only for the station you are listening to

  1. Tune to the station, then open the equalizer (MENU 6 4 3, or GREEN on the radio screen).
  2. Go with RIGHT to “For this station” and press OK: it shows “Yes”, and the explanation at the bottom gives the station name.
  3. Adjust the preset and the bands, then press GREEN. The other stations keep the usual settings.

Problems and solutions

I cannot hear any difference.

First check the “Equalizer” box: it must be “On”. Then read the status at the top: the equalizer works only on stations and channels with MPEG (MP2) sound. The green status “Playing with the equalizer: …” means it is working.

It says “On this station (AAC) the equalizer is not available for AAC patent licensing reasons.”

The station has AAC sound, which the equalizer cannot process. The sound plays normally, without the equalizer.

It says “This station has AC3 sound. The equalizer works on stations with MPEG (MP2) sound.”

The equalizer does not work with AC3 or DTS sound; the sound plays as usual. If the station has one, choose the MPEG sound track with the AUDIO key.

It says “The sound goes unchanged to the soundbar: set the equalizer, volume and night mode on the soundbar.”

The sound of this channel goes unchanged to the soundbar or audio system connected to the receiver. You make the sound adjustments there, with its own remote.

On TV channels it says “On TV channels the equalizer is turned off in the settings.”

In the web interface, on the /egalizator page, open “For tests and matching” and set “On TV channels” to Yes.

With recordings or when pausing live TV, the equalizer cannot be heard.

This is how it works: it says “The equalizer does not work on recordings or with timeshift. The sound goes through the sound chip.”. On live TV, the equalizer comes back.

On a TV channel with the equalizer, the words do not match the lips.

In the web interface, under “For tests and matching”, change “Matching with the picture on the TV”: a number with + if the lips move after the sound, one with − if the sound comes after the lips.

“For this station” shows “No station” and does not change.

No station is playing, or a film, an internet channel or a DAB+ station from satellite is playing. The settings are then kept for all stations. Tune to a station from the list and open the equalizer again.

It says “The equalizer could not start on this station (…). The sound goes through the sound chip.”

The sound plays normally, without the equalizer; the reason is in brackets (for example “no sound data came from the station”). Tune to the station again; if the message remains, listen to the station without the equalizer.

With the equalizer on, the station sounds louder or quieter than before.

Adjust “Level” (the last column): DOWN if it is too loud, UP if it is too quiet.
